Whitley Bay’s commute is the Metro. There is no national rail station in the town; the yellow-line loop through Station Square is how the coast gets to work, and it is a big part of what homes here cost. The good news is that it runs every 12 minutes through the day and reaches central Newcastle in under half an hour. The catch is the ticket machine: pay cash-style at the machine and a single to town is £5.10, while the same journey on Pop pay as you go is £2.50. The Whitley Bay Metro timetable, in short
Whitley Bay sits on the Metro’s coast loop between St James and South Shields, so trains from the same island platform reach Newcastle two ways round. Heading inland (towards South Shields on the timetable), you reach Haymarket in 24 minutes and Central Station in 28. Heading along the coast through North Shields (towards St James), it is 27 minutes to Monument and 29 to St James (Travel North East, Whitley Bay station, Monument station). Either way, the city centre is under half an hour.
Trains run every 12 minutes each way on weekdays through the day, dropping to every 15 minutes in the evening and on Sunday daytimes (Travel North East). You do not plan around a timetable so much as walk to Station Square and wait a few minutes.
First and last trains

- Last through train to Monument: 23:53 on weekdays. A 00:08 service runs but terminates at Manors, one stop short of Monument.
- On Saturdays the last through train to Monument leaves at 23:23; the 23:38 and 23:53 terminate at Manors.
- Towards South Shields, the first weekday train is 05:41 and the last 00:10, terminating at Longbenton.
What it means for you: a night out in Newcastle works on the Metro, but the hard deadline is just before midnight, and on Saturdays it is earlier than you probably assume. Check the last through train for the week you travel, especially during engineering work.
Whitley Bay Metro times by day: first and last trains
The weekday pattern above is not the whole story. Saturday and Sunday start later, and on both weekend days the last through train to Monument is half an hour earlier than on a weekday. Two traps hide in the late columns. On the inland platform, every train after the 23:10 stops at Longbenton, so the 23:25, 23:40, 23:55 and 00:10 never reach Newcastle at all. On the coast platform at the weekend, the 23:38, 23:53 and 00:08 stop at Manors, a short walk from Monument but not in it. If you are heading into town late, use the coast platform and catch it before midnight on a weekday, or before 23:25 on a Saturday or Sunday.
The last Metro from Newcastle to Whitley Bay
The way home is more forgiving than the way in, because trains from the city reach Whitley Bay from both sides of the loop. From Monument, the last two trains that get to Whitley Bay leave at about the same time every night of the week (Travel North East, Monument timetable):
- 23:40 from platform 2, inland via Haymarket and South Gosforth. It runs on through Whitley Bay to finish at Manors.
- 23:43 from platform 3, along the coast via Wallsend and North Shields. It runs on through Whitley Bay to finish at Longbenton.
Both reach Whitley Bay just after midnight: the station’s own timetable shows a train at 00:08 and one at 00:10. Do not wait for the 23:55 from platform 2, because it terminates at Benton, several stops short of Whitley Bay. Before 23:40 there is a train home roughly every 15 minutes from each of those two platforms.
What it costs in 2026
Whitley Bay is in fare Zone C and central Newcastle in Zone A, so a trip to town is an all-zones journey. The gap between the ways of paying is wide (Metro single fares, Pop pay as you go, day tickets):

What it means for you: get a Pop card. A commuter paying at the machine spends £10.20 a day on singles; the same two journeys on Pop pay as you go cost £5.00 because the daily cap kicks in. The card is free to order online and comes with a £5 starting balance, and Android users can add Pop pay as you go to Google Wallet instead (Pop pay as you go).
Season tickets
For five-day-a-week commuting, the season beats the cap. The three-zone season covering Whitley Bay to Newcastle costs £28.10 a week, £103.00 for four weeks or £947.00 a year, and it also covers the Shields Ferry and local rail between Newcastle and Sunderland (Metro season tickets). Against the £5.00 daily cap, the weekly season pays for itself on the sixth journey-day pattern of a full commuting week, so it suits five-day commuters while Pop suits everyone else.
Metro at Whitley Bay: what changes this autumn
Nothing in the core timetable changes week to week, but Nexus alters the service around it, and the alterations are published on Travel North East’s travel updates rather than on the station timetable. These are the ones a Whitley Bay passenger will notice between now and Christmas, all re-read on 12 October 2026:
- Saturday 24 October to Sunday 1 November: no trains through Whitley Bay. The line between St James and Monkseaton is closed in both directions for nine days, which covers the whole coast side of the loop from Manors to Whitley Bay. Replacement bus 900 runs between St James and Monkseaton, and a revised Metro service runs from South Shields to Monkseaton through the city centre and Shiremoor. - Regent Centre closes at 9pm, Monday to Thursday, until 17 December. The weekly closures run to Thursday 29 October, pause for the line closure, then restart on Monday 2 November and run to Thursday 17 December. Trains pass through without stopping and bus 901 links Regent Centre and South Gosforth. This is the green line, so it only matters if you change at South Gosforth or Monument for the Airport line late in the evening.
- Sunday 8 November, until about 11.30am: revised timetable. Network Rail work between Pelaw and South Hylton closes that end of the green line, and the yellow line between South Shields and St James runs to revised times that morning.
- University station: the staircases are closed until further notice, so use the ramps.
What it means for you: the closure falls across the October half term. If you normally take the Metro into town from Whitley Bay that week, Monkseaton, one stop inland, still has trains to the city centre, so the choice is the 900 bus all the way or a short hop to Monkseaton and the revised Metro from there.
The trains themselves
The fleet is new. Stadler’s Class 555 trains replaced the entire 1980 fleet in a £362 million programme, the biggest in the Metro’s history, with the first entering service in December 2024 and delivery of all 46 now complete (Nexus, A new Metro fleet). They carry linear seating, charging points, air conditioning and a sliding step at every door, which ended the old scramble over the platform gap.
Getting to London from Whitley Bay
There is no direct coast-to-capital train; the route is Metro to Newcastle Central Station (28 minutes), then the East Coast Main Line. Direct trains to London King’s Cross run roughly three times an hour for most of the day, with the fastest at 2 hours 46 minutes and typical services just over three hours (traintimes.org.uk, live National Rail data). In practice Whitley Bay to central London is around three and a half hours door to door.
On fares, the spread is wide: on the days we checked, Advance singles started at £66.70 off-peak, peak-morning Advances ran from around £137.90, and a walk-up Anytime single was £200.80 (traintimes.org.uk). The budget option is Lumo, which runs five direct London services a day from Newcastle with advance fares from around £25.90 when released (Lumo). Book ahead and travel off-peak; the same seat can cost three times as much bought on the day.
The station itself
Whitley Bay station on Station Square, with its 1910 portico and clock tower, has a free 76-space public car park off Station Square at Victoria Terrace, run by North Tyneside Council, plus four accessible bays by the taxi rank and 16 cycle spaces in pods on both sides of the station (Travel North East).
