Eight houses at Rosehill View in Howdon and eight flats on Elton Street East, Wallsend, are finished and will be let at social rents from the housing register.

Sixteen new council homes are finished on two derelict sites in Wallsend and Howdon, about five miles south-west of Whitley Bay. All 16 will be let at social rents to people on North Tyneside’s housing register.

North Tyneside Council announced the completions on 22 October.

What has been built

Site Homes Was
Rosehill View, Howdon 8 two- and three-bedroom terraced houses Rosehill Social Club
Elton Street East, Wallsend 8 one- and two-bedroom flats in two buildings Parkside House, a disused office

The council says the former social club had stood empty for years and had become derelict, attracting vandalism and antisocial behaviour. The Howdon houses were built by Able Construction (Northern) Ltd and designed to match the neighbouring homes on Northumberland Terrace.

At Parkside, the ground-floor flats are designed to be accessible. The site is a short walk from Wallsend town centre and its Metro station.

Every home:

  • is fully electric
  • is heated by an air source heat pump
  • has its own electric vehicle charging point

Who paid

North East Mayor Kim McGuinness put more than £390,000 from her Brownfield Housing Fund into the two sites. The Parkside flats also had a grant from Homes England’s Affordable Homes Programme 2021 to 2026. The council’s release does not give the total cost of either scheme.

“Residents in Howdon and Wallsend have seen two neglected sites transformed,” said Councillor John Harrison, the council’s Cabinet Member for Housing.

Ms McGuinness said she wants to build 15,000 more social and affordable homes across the North East.
